I moved there when I was just a kid
But, I still claim myself a Texan…
Because it was at five years old,
that my childhood really began.

Lived off a dirt road on Rainbow ranch.
My brother & I would race barefoot on rocks
Darting around trees, & hurtling dried up river beds
Trying to steal feathers from the tails of peacocks.

I was as wild as the deer & ‘coons
We had no winter between our summers & falls
I could climb any tree, and played house
Using branches for stairs, and sticks for play dolls

(refrain)
the lightening storms held power & might
Cracking the sky, and shaking the floor
We could see the Milky-Way almost every night
And the Lone-star glowed through our front door

I can hear it, feel it, taste it, see it oh soo clearly even today.
That fresh scent, and bright green after a hot summer rain…
I’m not saying I would go back in time and never have moved away.
But, I sure do miss those:.. Texas Lone star Days

dry drought, Hot rains,
dirt roads, grass stains,
nothin’ new, small town,
gross sweat, slow down,
bright stars, Texas skies,
morning dew, Fire-flies
BBQ, tree-climbs
Soccer games, good times..
hope my Lone Star never fades
Hope I never to forget.. those Rainbow Ranch days…!

My Grandpop, mother, and father built our home
With a pick-axe, some love, and a lot of sweat in the TX heat..
From the second story porch, on our rocking chairs,
You could see for miles over hills & into a sky as deep as the sea…

If ever there were a house to be blessed by the grace of God,
It would be our grand home, rooted in [the heart of] His blessed land.
Our front doors adorned with large oval windows of stained-glass
where the lone-star of Texas glowed, vivid & grand.

If we heard a car coming near, we knew it was lost.
Bonfires that would scare any Northerner away.
Sweating through my soccer jersey, and fire-ant mounds
Playing for melted candy during a monthly “Wimberley day.”

Skinned knees, chapped lips, kick-ball & rusty slides.
Minnow catching with our hands at the creek & zip-lines.
Hand-claps, hop-scotch, jump-ropes, & lengthy car rides.
Dirt roads, no stop lights, and broken street signs…

Wild and fearless, free and untamed, I was a spirited girl.
Oh, How I miss those Lone-star days, with no fenced-in land or lot …
But then, I only longed for adventure and to explore the world
I suppose, until you loose it, you never know what you got.
